Public Lecture - Gendered Ageism

14.10.2024

Prof. Rochon is Director of the Women’s Age Lab at the Women’s College Hospital, Toronto, and Professor at the Department of Medicine and Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, ate the University of Toronto.

Her research focuses on societal health challenges encountered by older adults, highlighting how women and men experience health and healthcare differently.

Background
The public lecture is part of the research retreat on « Gendered Ageism in Health Care for Older Adults », that takes place from October 14th-17th, 2024, in Erlangen (organizer: Dr. Sandra Kurkowski, Dr. Elisabeth Langmann, PD Dr. Nadia Primc). Gendered ageism refers to the intersectional discrimination based on age and gender, which significantly impacts the health and well-being of older adults. Despite growing awareness of gender and age-related biases in healthcare, the combined effect of these biases remains underexplored. This research retreat aims to bridge this gap by fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue among early career scholars. The program will engage participants in a comprehensive analysis of the manifestations of gendered ageism in various healthcare settings, including mental health and palliative care. It will also explore strategies to mitigate the effects of this form of discrimination. By combining theoretical frameworks from feminist bioethics and practical approaches to healthcare equity, the program seeks to develop actionable insights and promote a more inclusive and just healthcare system for all older adults.
